The Federal Government has selected Ogun, Niger, Sokoto and Cross River states, to pioneer its Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), aimed at energising 10,000 mini grids to underserved and off- national grid communities across the country by 2020,
The State Coordinator and Team Lead, Patrick Fash, disclosed this in Abeokuta, during sensitization for community engagement, in preparation for NEP mini grid projects in 13 communities across the State.
He said that Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has four coordinators in four states, with five teams each to sensitize communities on the impact of the solar electricity mini-grid, which is being deployed nationwide.
Communities to benefit in the State includes; Coker 1 and 2 in Ifo Local Government Area, Ereruk and Iju ilasa in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Ajebandele in Ijebu East, Ita-Egba (Omen) in Ijebu North, Kajola and Mokolokin 1 in Obafemi Owode, Alapako-Oni in Odeda Local Government Areas.
Other Communities are; Ajeda (Wekan) in Ipokia, Iwoye (Jaja) in Yewa South, Ohunbe in Yewa North and Otapele in Imeko Afon.
Fash, who expressed satisfaction with the hospitality accorded him and his team in the 13 communities visited, said NEP was a private sector driven initiative of the Federal Government, to provide electricity to households, micro, small and medium enterprises in off-grid communities across the country through renewable power sources.
He pointed out that the project would be implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), in collaboration with the World Bank and African Development Bank.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, the NEP coordinating agency for the State, Rev. Gbele Olugbebi, expressed the State’s readiness to ensure a successful implementation of the project, adding that earlier in the year, the State had commissioned 85kw solar hybrid grid in Gbamu gbamu community, under the Nigeria Energy Support Programme.
He said that people in the communities already connected to the grid, are giving testimonies to the efficiency of the power supply, saying more communities and business owners are eager to be connected.
