Ogun Education,Health Ministries Work Out Modalities On Disease Elimination

Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Health have agreed to ensure that capable teachers are available, as well as mobilizing pupils and enlightening parents for successful administering of de-worming drugs and other prevailing Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), across the 20 Local Government Areas of the State.

 

The indication came to the fore during an Advocacy visit to the Education Ministry by NTD Department of the Ministry of Health, on how to eliminate the emerging deadly diseases among the people.

 

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu assured the team that his Ministry would continue to partner with relevant stakeholders on issues that could better the lots of school children, to make them excel in their studies.

 

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Abosede Ogunleye, Arigbabu affirmed that the request of incorporating Deworming Day into school calendar would be critically looked into, promising to join hands in the launch of adequate advocacy for the total eradication of NTD.

 

In her remarks, the Ogun State Coordinator of NTD, Dr. Islamiat Soneye noted that Ogun State Govenrment is taking steps, towards ensuring that diseases like Onchocerciasis, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminths were prevented among the people, adding that Ministry of Health has put up programmes, such as School Based De-worming exercise, to combat the diseases.

 

Speaking earlier, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Gideon Uduak and Countdown Organization, Dr. Akinola Oluwole, solicited for more support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to train teachers on proper administering of de-worming drugs in schools.
