The study of french language as well as other foreign languages has been revealed to be of importance and usefulness that would open doors of opportunities for learners to benefit from in the pursuit of life.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu made this known during a courtesy call to his office in Abeokuta by the Nigeria Association of French Teachers, he disclosed that french and other languages such as german, chinese, spanish cannot be overemphasized for job opportunities and other benefits to the budding young ones.
Arigbabu posited that government strides in the education sector can only yield results if teachers were given the needed trainings and support for better service delivery in order to be abreast of latest development of their subjects.
The Commissioner pointed out that the present administration has great value for all its teachers for their commitment to the revitalization agenda of the education sector, reassuring them that government would not relent in putting in place necessary measures and incentives for better opportunities to thrive.
“I want to urge you to continue to help us encourage our learners to study french language. I want to assure you that we will not relent to support you through trainings and workshops for better service delivery and for you to continue to thrive”, he said.
Arigbabu charged the association on the need to continue to sensitize and encourage learners of the benefit and usefulness of learning french language which he said can open doors of opportunities for them in future.
In his address, the Vice President of the association (Ijebu chapter), Mr. Raheem Toyin laud the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for supporting French activities in schools such as spelling bees, this he pointed out has helped increase the enrollment and improved performance of learners sitting for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior Secondary Examination Council (WASSCE) considerably.
But like Oliver Twist, the association called for favorable consideration of french teachers in recruitment process to tackle the shortage of subject teachers, more availability of french language activities in schools, extensive training of teachers for improved teaching methodology, public sensitization of the need to encourage the learning of the subject and many more.
