Civil Servants need to continue to develop themselves and be abreast of new trends to remain relevant and productive for effective service delivery.
Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, stated this during an in-house training on “Speech/Memo Writing and Office Practices and Etiquette”, organised by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments, at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, the Commissioner pointed out that learning through continuous training was essential, due to emerging challenges that require new strategies.
“Without training, we can easily become stale and will be using strategies of yester years to tackle evolving and emerging challenges of today and it is not going to work. If you want a different result you have to do things differently; that underscores the need for training from time to time”, he said.
While complementing Governor Dapo Abiodun for consistently building the capacity of workers in the state, Mr. Sofela, who noted that the training was organised to help workers improve on their productivity, added that the hallmark of any good officer was the ability to speak and write, said the Ministry would monitor the progress of participants.
In her lecture titled, “Office Practice and Etiquette”, Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Roseline Jacobs, stressed the need for work environment to be conducive for workers to be productive, adding that employees and team members should contribute their quota to the actualisation of management goals by being punctual, well dressed, communicate and manage time effectively, among others.
Also presenting a paper on “Speech and Memo Writing”, Director, Administration and Supplies, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Tope Balogun, explained that speech and memo writers should be “in-depth thinkers, with a sense of flexibility in accommodating changes and the willingness to embrace critical but relevant ideas of others”.
Speaking on behalf of other participants, Senior Geologist, Mr. Sunday Sesinu and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Sharon Edun, lauded the Ministry for regularly organising capacity-building sessions, saying they had learnt strategies which would aid in the discharge of their duties.
