The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has mandated top police officials to ensure the safety of participants in the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest, scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024.
This directive was issued in response to a letter from prominent human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Adegboruwa, writing on behalf of the Take It Back Movement, requested police protection for the protesters. His letter, dated July 26, 2024, emphasized the need for adequate security during the demonstrations.
In his response, dated July 29, 2024, the IGP instructed senior police officers to comply with Adegboruwa’s request. The directive was signed by the IGP’s Principal Staff Officer, CP Johnson Adenola.
Additionally, the IGP has invited Adegboruwa to a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to further discuss the security arrangements for the protest.
This development underscores the authorities’ recognition of the protesters’ rights to peaceful assembly and the importance of ensuring their safety during the upcoming demonstrations.
