Abeokuta, Ogun State – The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to amend the Obas and Chiefs, Council of Obas, and Traditional Council Laws of Ogun State, 2021. The bill’s passage followed the presentation of a report by the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, delivered by its Vice Chairman, Hon. Dickson Awolaja.
During the plenary session, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, the amendment bill was read and adopted clause-by-clause by the Committee of the Whole House. The motion for the third reading of the bill was moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukmon Adeleye, and supported by a unanimous voice vote from the entire House. Following the third reading, the Clerk and Head of Legislative Service, Sakiru Adebakin, read the bill, after which Speaker Elemide directed that the clean copy be forwarded to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his assent.
In a related development, the Assembly also witnessed the first reading of a new bill titled the Ogun State Power Sector Law, 2024. The bill aims to improve electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the state, establish an electricity market and key power sector bodies, and enforce consumer rights and obligations. The Assembly Clerk, Sakiru Adebakin, read the title of the bill before the lawmakers, marking its first official step in the legislative process.
Additionally, the Assembly commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his approval of 100 hectares of land designated for the establishment of a naval base in the state. The project, facilitated by Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District, was included in the 2024 National Appropriation Act. The commendation came in response to a presentation by Hon. Lawal Samsideen, representing Ogun Waterside State Constituency, who praised both the Governor and Senator Daniel for their efforts. The Assembly noted that the naval base, once operational, would significantly enhance the security network of the area and the state at large.
