In its continued effort to improve the welfare and well-being of the people, Ogun State government, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Abeokuta, has given out clothes and shoes to vulnerable in the state.
Presenting the items on behalf of the state government at the Abeokuta South Local Government Secretariat Ake, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, stated that the gesture was a way of reaching out to the less-privileged in the society.
Mr. Oresanya, informed that the initiative was borne out of the need to give out reusable items like clothes, shoes, among others, to those who cannot afford them, saying his Ministry, as well as that of Women Affairs and Women Development would ensure successful implementation of the programme.
He explained that reuse bins had been placed at the inner side of eateries for people to dump used and unused items for the vulnerable, assuring that the distribution would be extended to other local government areas in the state.
Contributing, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, said the initiative was a way of preventing environmental pollution, as people were in the habit of burning unused or unwanted clothes, promising to sustain the initiative.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr. Sam Oyeleye, noted that the scheme would go a long way in putting smiles on the faces of the vulnerable in the society.
Also speaking, Director of Community Development Abeokuta South Local Government, Mrs. Funke Ajasa, lauded the initiative, saying the move would help save the environment and provide for the needy.
On his part, a representative of Rotary Club Abeokuta, Mr. Adekunle Banjo, stated that the organisation, known for its humanitarian gesture would leave no stone unturned in giving back to the less-privileged in the society, pledging continued support towards the scheme.
In their responses, two beneficiaries, Mr. Dina Abowaba from Ake and Mrs. Kudirat Sogunle from Onikoko, appreciated the people-friendly policy of the present administration, towards restoring the hope of the down-trodden in the state.
