Ogun State Government through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education has trained public school teachers in Remo axis of the State on 21st century techniques on how best to manage learner’s behaviour.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr. Ronke Soyombo during the roundup training sessions organised for Public Secondary Schools in all the four regions of the State, highlighted aggression, disrespect towards authority, parental neglect, inadequate facilities, outdated textbooks and insufficient technology resulting in boredom, disinterest and misbehavior of learners.
Dr. Soyombo enjoined teachers to pay attention to their ascent, dressing, comportment, pro-activeness, teaching prowess and have a good command of subject knowledge, adding that for a teacher to successfully manage the behaviour of learners, such a teacher must find out the root cause of learner’s behaviour to know how to manage it well. “Teachers must know and pay attention to their teaching style,” Soyombo said.
Responding, Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi, assured that teachers would not be left out in the ongoing reform in the State through regular training of management staff, admonishing them to build positive relationships with the learners and to join the government in reforming learners to become better future leaders.
Welcoming participants to the programme, Principal General of Remo, Dr. Olubunmi Womiloju, enumerated certain guides to managing behaviours such as, understanding the root causes of challenging behaviour, building positive relationships with learners, creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, as well as implementing effective behaviour management strategies.
Remarking, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rtd, DIG Peter Ogunyanwo, noted that in managing negative behaviours of students such as bullying, stealing, gang raping, fighting, late coming, among others, teachers have to pay attention to the position of laws, so as not to be liable of committing criminal offense.
In his address, the State President of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mr. Adeniyi Adekoya said setting up the programme was an indication that the Special Adviser is an asset to education in Ogun State, affirming that the association was willing to be associated with her to further achieve government policy on education.
Speaking, the Chairmen, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools and Nigerian Union of Teachers, Ogun State Branch, Mr. Oluwaseun Agbesanwa, represented by his deputy, Comrade Waheed Adegbite and Noah Sewakanu, represented by Comrade Okulalu, urged teachers to actively participate, engage with the material, and share their insights, saying the training was an opportunity to enhance their skills, network with colleagues, and stay updated on best practices in behavioural management.
In their responses, the Principal of Isara Secondary School, Isara, Mrs. Kikelomo Onasanya and a teacher at Simawa High school, Mr. Femi Shoyebo appreciated the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education for organising such educative programme, saying the training had equipped them with the wherewithal to extend love, care and be positive in correcting the learners.
