The National Drug Law Enforcement agency (NDLEA) Ogun State command has sought the support of the Ministry of Sports Development to curb the increasing cases of drug abuse.
Commander of Narcotics in the Agency in Ogun State, Mrs. Eucharia Ekwu Stated this at a State drug control committee Stake holders Engagement, Organised by NDLEA Ogun State Command, in Abeokuta, themed ” United for a Drug free Future: building Strong Communities in Ogun State”.
Ekwu said the Ministry was a key Stakeholder that had the Capacity to effectively promote its Sensitisation Campaign against drug abuse.
She revealed that many Nigerians were abusing Narcotic Substances with women having an alarming involvement, adding that the use of both conventional and non-conventional substance such as; Tramadol, kerosene, glue Lizard dug, among others had destroyed lives and destinies of thousands of youths who ignorantly indulged in it.
“There is a need for Collaborative effort to support the sensitisation campaign and building stronger communities in Ogun State to salvage the situation and stem the tides of the menace,” she said.
Responding, the Commissioner for Sport, Development Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, appreciated the Command, lauded its remarkable achievements in the fight against drug abuse in the State.
Hon. Isiaka, also decried the high prevelance of drug abuse, particularly among women folks, attributed the cause to poor parenting and societal negligence due to modernism which had set many youths at liberty to indulge in criminality and abuse of Narcrotic Substances.
“The issue of drug abuse is one of the important mandate of National Sports Commision, to measure that Nigerian Athletes are devoid of drug problem at both domestic and international competitions, we are happy now that the National anti-doping law has finally been passed by our Sports loving President,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, President of Wahab Foundation, Asiwaju Dapo Wahab, said drug abuse among youths is still a serious threat over the years.” If we are to protect our youth and secure our tommorow, we must stand together for a Drug-free future,” he said.
Highlight of the workshop was the bringing together of Government Agencies, NGOs, Schools traditional Institutions, and the private Sectors for a truly united for a drug-free Future.
