Teachers across Ogun State have been urged to continually improve their teaching skills and acquaint themselves with modern instructional methods to stand out in their profession.
The Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Olalekan Ifede, gave the charge during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to the Board’s Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Ifede emphasised that, it was the duty employer to crave for self-development through personal determination, diligence and dedication in order to excel in the chosen profession.
The SUBEB boss commended the NUT for its coordination and organisation during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, urging for a sustained effort. He also called for continued collaboration between the Board and the Union, stressing that teachers’ primary assignment, which is knowledge impartation, remained the most crucial aspect of their profession.
“Once the primary assignment is done, we are on the same page. What is most important is that your contribution to the success of our learners matters greatly to us,” Ifede stated.
He further advised teachers to uphold decency and commitment in their duties, describing them as “pillars of academic excellence.”
Ifede congratulated a teacher of Community Primary School, Mile 2, Abeokuta North, Mr. James Odubela, who emerged as the 2025 Best School Administrator in Ogun State and Best School Leader at the national level, as well as Mr. Solanke Taiwo of Ansar-ud-Deen Main School 1, Kemta-Ilawo, Abeokuta North, who was named Best Teacher in Ogun State and Best Teacher in Nigeria, 2025, for making the State proud.
“Many teachers only go to class, teach what they want, and return home, while others strive daily to improve themselves. I don’t think what you were taught in school is enough to take you where you are today, you must have engaged in some personal development,” he said.
In his remarks, the Permanent Member II of SUBEB, Hon. Isiaka Aderoumu, said the visit was an opportunity to discuss and share ideas that would further enhance the growth and development of basic education in the State.
Also speaking, the Board Secretary, Mr. Olubori Akinleye, noted that identifying with the Union and extending a hand of fellowship were essential, as effective management of education required industrial harmony between the Board and the NUT.
Delivering his speech, the State Chairman of the NUT, Comrade Sewakanu Noah, said the visit aimed to strengthen existing collaboration and explore new ways to deepen the partnership. He appreciated SUBEB Directors for their integrity and dedication to the growth of the Board.
Noah appealed to SUBEB to address the challenges faced by teachers in the discharge of their duties and to involve the Union in policy formulation and implementation, leveraging its experience and leadership capacity.
“As the Board works on the directive of His Excellency regarding teachers’ development, we urge you to ensure that the process reflects a humane attitude that considers the physical and mental well-being of teachers. The sustenance of homes and marriages should also be prioritised because a happy teacher produces happy future leaders,” he affirmed.
