A fire outbreak on Saturday destroyed four out of five blocks of three-bedroom flats at a residential building located at No. 13 Nelson Mandela Street, Asokoro, Abuja.
The fire was reportedly first noticed on solar panels mounted on the roof of one of the buildings before spreading to adjoining flats.
Confirming the incident, the Head of Public Affairs of the Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, said the affected property is said to belong to a former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Ahmed Yerima.
Isa, quoting the Head of FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team, Mr. Monday Addie, said the incident was reported at about 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. She added that although no life was lost, the four affected flats were completely razed by the inferno.
“According to the Head of FEMD Search and Rescue Team, Mr. Monday Addie, the incident was reported at about 1pm. No life was lost to the incident. However, the four affected flats were totally burned,” the statement read.
She disclosed that several personal belongings, including furniture, clothing, food items, and other household effects, were destroyed in the fire.
Emergency responders from the FEMD, Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the FCT Police Command were said to have swiftly responded to the incident and brought the situation under control.
